Kennel cough (ITB) is the most common contagious respiratory disease in dogs. Most dog owners mistakenly think their dogs can only catch ITB while at the kennels. Dogs can catch ITB almost anywhere. ITB can be transmitted by any social interaction with other dogs, therefore it is very important to have your dog vaccinated against this troublesome infection. ITB is highly contagious and is readily transmitted to susceptible dogs housed in a high density dog population or boarding kennel. It is transmitted through the air or by contact with contaminated surfaces or other dogs. Puppies and younger, unvaccinated dogs are at the greatest risk, but even older dogs can acquire kennel cough. Ask your local vet for the vaccination if you are unsure as to your pets medical history.
